Book Clubs
Book clubs are a great way to share your love of books with others. It’s also a good way to discover books that you may not usually read and to become involved in discussions.
Book clubs with the library
Gympie Regional Libraries hold over 100 book club sets. Each set contains eight books to share among club members. To join a book club or to find out more information please contact Gympie Library on 5481 0859.
Guidelines and ideas for running a book club
Book Clubs are a wonderful way to share your appreciation of good books with like-minded people. Avid readers across the world love to meet up regularly and swap ideas about the art of great writing. But how do you start up a book club? Your local branch of Gympie Regional Libraries is the best place to begin as we currently hold over 170 Book Club sets ready for loan. In every set, there are eight copies of each book, so every member of your book club can read an individual copy, before your next meeting.
Let’s get started!
- Choose a day and time of the month that is suitable. As a group, the day/time can be discussed and amended if required.
- Think about where you would like to meet. Some may choose to meet at homes, at cafes or the library. Some groups meet at the same place each month, others meet somewhere different each time.
- Choose a coordinator. Members, please remember that your coordinator is a book club member first. The coordinator role should not be a chore, and it is up to the group to ensure that the coordinator is assisted by returning your copy of the book at the meeting or arranging the return if you cannot attend. It is important that the whole book set is returned together. Coordinators – please share relevant emails and information with your group.
- It is a good idea for the group to create a wish list of titles they would like to read – up to 5 titles per member. Each month having at least 3 choices to request helps avoid disappointment.
- The loan period for book club sets is 5 weeks; you can reserve one set ahead. Reserved sets will sit on the reserve shelf for 10 days. The set is loaned as a set and should be returned as a set so that other clubs do not miss out.
- Please do not take your book club set copy on holiday or loan it to another person. If you are going away, use/request an eBook/audiobook or borrow a library copy on your card.
- We currently have over 170 book club sets. Each set is comprised of eight copies.
- Although there isn’t a cost for registering a Book Club, we do request that each club donates a set of 8 titles each October. Please contact the Information Services Officer at this time to check that someone else has not already purchased the title you are considering.
