Seed Library
The Friends of Gympie Regional Libraries Seed Library aims to grow community interest in gardening as well as empower our members with the knowledge on how to grow their own food and create their own sustainable gardens. The Seed Library is free and open to anyone with a library membership. Similar to your usual library borrowing experience, a seed library allows our community to “borrow” seeds from the library to grow and enjoy at home.
How does it work?
Select up to six seed packets per month from your local library to take home and grow. Seed packets can be found at all Gympie Regional Libraries branches during opening hours.
Take your new seeds home to grow by following the information on each packet. Gympie Regional Libraries also has a variety of gardening books and magazines available to assist you in creating your very own sustainable garden!
Once your seeds have matured and produced seeds it's time to harvest and donate back to the Seed Library. Donations can be made to any library branch. Collect one of the donation packets or use an envelope from home, include information about the variety, collection date and growth conditions to ensure the seeds can be saved and sorted. Then pop your seeds into the packet, ready for you to hand it in to library staff next time you visit the library.
Need some guidance to help get started?
As part of our sustainability program, Gympie Regional Libraries host a series of educational workshops and talks to inspire, educate and grow social connections among those interested in gardening, food, and learning more about how to be sustainable in our day to day lives.
