Local History Collection

If you enjoy local history, you will love visiting the History Room at Gympie Library. Learn about our heritage and memories, local street names, history pin, and the past in print. There is also a large collection of historical photos. The Local History Collection includes:

  • The Gympie Times on microfilm from 1868
  • Local, district and school histories
  • Genealogical research materials
  • Over 6,000 historical photographs
  • Gold mining historical information
  • Queensland Pioneers Index 1829–1889
  • Queensland Federation Index 1914–1980.

Library staff keep documents and photos that record our past. You are welcome to donate any historical items to the collection.

You can print the documents for 20c per black and white A4 page, and $1 per colour A4 page. Our local history officer can also email them to you or put them onto your USB for free.

Our local history officer is on-hand on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday each week from 9am to 5pm. Please make an appointment by phone on 5481 0859 or email library@gympie.qld.gov.au.

Visit our Genealogy and Heritage page to learn more about family history.

Scanning Photographs/Slides/Negatives

Thanks to a Be Connected grant, you now have access to a flatbed scanner in the Local History Room. Bring along a USB, your photos/slides or negatives and make digital copies of them. You will need to have computer skills to operate a Windows laptop.
